Bigger Family, Bigger Bed

When you are a new couple you only need a full sized bed. After all, you find yourself cuddling together in the middle of the bed anyway, so what’s the point of getting something larger? Then the first child comes along and you realize that you suddenly have to start sharing your bed. By the time the second baby makes their appearance you might be realizing that it’s time to upgrade to a slightly larger bed.

In case you didn’t know the order, here’s how it goes: Full Size, Queen Size, King Size, and California King Size. Each bed is larger than the one before it. The California King Size Bed is four inches longer and 4 inches narrower than the regular King. I guess people are taller in California.

Look around your room and figure out how much room you really have. If you’ve got enough room for a California King, go for it! If not, try measuring to see if a queen or king will fit comfortably. Remember to leave enough room to walk around, as you don’t want to be stubbing your toe during at 3 a.m. when one of the children gets up.

Next comes the style. Most parents of young children tend to stay away from anything that has slats (little hands and feet get stuck very easily), so look for headboards that don’t include slats. The Fashion Bed Group and Hillsdale Furniture both have a huge selection of Metal Beds, Wood Beds and Headboards that will work for any parents.

Finally go for what you like. You may be buying the bed to allow all of you to squeeze in occasionally, but first and foremost it’s your bed. Purchase a type of bed that you have always wanted, because parents deserve treats too! And remember: your bed may be able to be passed down as an heirloom!
