The world of furniture evolves at a pretty fast pace. What was once popular and the height of fashion today can end up in the clearance isle a decade from now. Platform beds have become the single most popular style of bed for decorators under the age of 40 for several reasons, such as the fact that you don’t need a box spring, they are often less expensive than other kinds of beds, such as metal beds, and they have a sleek, modern look people love. If you own a modern platform bed, though, you’re probably looking for a few design tips to help create the perfect room around this amazing piece of furniture. These might help.

• Since your platform bed is a bit closer to the ground than other popular kinds of beds, you may be able to survive the switch to comforters easier than you would otherwise. Many long time blanket users complain that comforters are simply too warm, but since your platform bed is low to the ground, the one or two degree difference could really help do the trick. Comforter sets look smashing with platform beds and they are often easier to take care of than blankets, as well.

• Most platform beds don’t need a headboard, which means you can choose one that is purely decretive, instead of one that has to be functional. This is a magical chance to let your creativity, and your unique personality, shine through. You can try an upholstered headboard or even a leather one that matches your modern décor. The only thing holding you back is your imagination, so don’t be afraid to get a little crazy.

• The theme of any room is essential, and with a modern platform, you may want to go with an Oriental theme, as this piece of furniture naturally lends itself to that idea. Keep in mind, though, most Oriental-themed rooms are also pretty minimalist, so if you have quite a bit of stuff to store in your room, this may not be the theme for you.
