For those unfamiliar with trundle beds, a short history lesson may be in order. Trundles were first introduced hundreds of years ago so servants could always be near at hand, even while sleeping. The trundle was a mattress that was fitted onto the main bed, usually popping or rolling away from the bigger and undoubtedly more luxurious bed. Not a very glamorous start to be sure. So why on earth would anyone choose to sleep on a trundle bed? They surely weren’t built with the servants’ comfort in mind.

Today’s trundles are a different story altogether. They have left their humble roots behind and are now at the forefront of both practical and stylish home furnishings. The variety is astonishing. From large traditional beds to contemporary daybeds, you can find trundles hidden in the most surprising of places. The reason for their resurgence in popularity is the extreme practicality they hold.

• Did you have an extra guest and no place to put him? No problem, simply pop out the trundle and you have more sleeping space.
• Is your child having a sleepover? Why toss and turn on a hard floor? Sleep in style with a trundle bed.

What’s more, though, is that it’s not just an extra bed. It’s a great place to sleep without the hassles of finding another place for a bed in your home. When not in use, simply fold away. It saves space and money.

But some trundle beds can also be full time members of your décor. For example, the Colorado Bunk Bed by Atlantic has a trundle bed – perfect for triplets or three children sharing a room. Those with studio apartments will appreciate the convenience as well: a daybed with trundle can act as a couch during the day and pull out into a full service, bed for two at night. Use it all the time or as needed when you have a full house: either way, you’ll be surprised at how comfortable and stylish today’s trundles are.
