China’s International Furniture Fair

Furniture Today recently covered the story of how the Chinese companies hosting the International Famous Furniture Fair are also preparing to welcome two American organizations for a meeting regarding the sustainability of the Chinese furniture industry. The Industrial Designers Society of America and CDI Lifestyle Company (a American-based importer of home furnishing products), will join Dongguan Famous Furniture Association and Hong Kong Furniture Association, among others, to discuss how the world’s largest exporter of such goods can continue to compete in the international market.

It is not just the economics of the industry that is a concern.  Leading players believe that it could be improved vastly by working with American design talents, which come together under the title of IDSA (Industrial Designers Society of America).  CDI, for example, has already developed strong roots on the Asian continent and is more than willing to assist in the efforts to improve Chinese manufacturers’ product lines.  Higher quality dining room ensembles, safe nursery furniture, and bedroom sets that are built to last will likely keep the Chinese companies in the running much longer.

More than nine hundred furniture manufacturers will come together under the same roof for the five-day event, including Brooke Davis, Gregory Varo, and Dario Antonioni.  Many eagerly await the developments brought about from this one-day conglomeration.  The American gathering, called the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, was held in New York City in May 2011.  That event welcomed more than 500 exhibitors from over 30 countries for a four-day event that made headlines for the amazing pieces of design present.  This event, on the other side of the world, is likely to showcase the same at its location at the Houjie Trade Center in Dongguan, China, September 5-9, 2011.
