Is Your Home Décor Keeping Up with the Kardashians?
It’s ok if you’re not quite keeping up with the Kardashians when it comes to your home décor – at least with Kourtney, the eldest sister of the famous trio. Recently settled into a $1.7 million home in Los Angeles, Kourtney has been attacking her house with a style vengeance. But, according to People magazine, her sense of aesthetics may leave something to be desired. Kardashian’s partner, Scott Disick says, “Our house looks like it’s out of Beetlejuice.”
One of the biggest, and best, style trends we are seeing is the mixing of patterns. For so long, people have been afraid to do this, but the effects can be stunning. Or they can be Beetlejuice-esque. Disick says, “She’s got some new room with checkered carpeting, checkered benches, checkered coffee tables. There are like 90 different patterns in one. It’s kind of creepy.”
But, he adds, “If she’s into it, let her have her fun. I hang out in the garage.” See, you can agree with your partner on your home décor.
The rest of the Kardashians avoided this by hiring sought-after designer Jeff Andrews. During the season 6 premiere of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Andrews’s work will be showcased in nearly every scene of the Jenner house in Calabasas, California. Andrews had about four months to complete this mammoth 6,000-square-foot decorating project. (And that’s only the ground floor). He says, “I’ve never worked like that before. It was crazy. Some days we’d have as many as 20 people working here.”
On the agenda: redoing the formal living and dining rooms, updating the family room, offices, guest suite, and foyer, and giving the kitchen a facelift. In the powder room, Andrews has gone with a night theme with Swarovski crystals on the ceiling, according to the LA Times.
There is very little that is subtle about the Kardashians or their décor, but Andrews was able to temper the dramatic style of Kris Jenner to keep it from becoming extreme. Jenner’s love of black and white, for instance, was softened and varied by the use of charcoal. For her part, Ms. Jenner was appreciative of the work Andrews and his crew did for her family and home. “She’ll always show up with a box of Krispy Kremes and always has a very high level of respect for what we do.”
So, can you get a little Kardashian style without the multimillion dollar budget? You can try a very sophisticated color palette. If black, white, and charcoal is not your style, try some bold shades that are hot for 2011: lime green, eggplant, or even white-on-white. Another great way to introduce luxury on a budget is with your fabrics. Invest in good quality bedding, comforters, and window treatments to create a textured, luxe look for less.
