Upcycle: Try This Chic Craft for a Great Focal Point

Swivel Bar Stool

As you look through catalogues and decorating magazines, you are probably seeing far more “green” products for the home.  What is really great about these is, often, you can make them at home from materials that you already have or can easily find.  You will see t-shirt rugs selling for $60, $70, or more.  Why not turn your pile of old, worn t-shirts into something completely new and interesting?  If you know how to crochet – or want to learn – this is a great, fast project that will yield a terrific piece for your home.  Start by cutting a continuous strip from a t-shirt. Keep doing this until you have enough “yarn” for your rug.

Then look for an easy to follow tutorial.  You can find any number online, from very easy E-How style instructions to this one for a beautiful flotaki style rug.  The benefit of these types of rugs is that they look incredible in contemporary decors, perhaps accenting a group of modern bar stools, and they are equally at home in more traditional and eclectic settings.  They also allow you to use items you may have just thrown away for a new and chic purpose.  Upcycle those shirts and save $70 on a new rug!
