Using Black in Home Decor

It turns out that black is the new black.  There is no doubt that this is a very bold shade; while flattering in fashion, it tends to overwhelm rooms and create a bat cave-like atmosphere unless it is used in small doses.  But, according to AgentGenius, a leading real estate news source, black is making itself quite at home – and not as a mere accessory.  And even better:  “The surprising part about black is that it’s not being used in man caves; it has become a very classic and sometimes feminine color.”  How do you make black work for you?

First, find inspiration!  Jane Hall is your muse if you want to incorporate bold black into your home décor.  This interior designer created a stunning – and unbelievably bright – home for herself with black as the star.  She says, “I love the drama of black set off against a white…You can never go wrong with a colour scheme that starts with black and white. It’s timeless and yet totally modern at the same time.”  You can see how well she accomplishes this in her own home at HGTV.ca’s blog.

What is immediately obvious about Hall’s style is it is anything but dark. She uses bright pops of color, such as lime green, pink, magenta, yellows, spring and darker green, and white to balance the more austere (or elegant!) black.  Here are some tips, whether you want to go all out or add more subtle touches:

  • Should you paint your walls black?  It depends.  If you have very little natural light, you may want to skip the look.  Rooms with lots of natural light or very good artificial light will prevent the décor from becoming too dark.

  • If you do paint your walls, get the highest quality paint you can afford, and the best brushes.  Splurge for a good high nap roller cover.  Use matte black except if your room is filled with windows, in which case, a glossy paint will work better.

  • Opt for a dark charcoal gray if you’re intimidated by black or want more depth.

  • Skip the walls and paint your floor black.

  • Group your favorite photographs on a black accent wall.

A black-centered décor is certainly not for every style or every home.  But it can have tremendous visual impact and help you create a room that is urprisingly calm and relaxing.
