Yesterday’s Design, Today’s Treasure

The 1980s saw many new, crazy, and super hip home design trends.  From the ultra chic modern beds to the mega funky dinner sets, it seemed to be the decade of the overdone.  Yet, just when one thought that big and bold had been washed away by the sleek, smooth, contemporary lines of the 21st Century, there is rejuvenated interest in the extravagant pieces of yesteryear.

Actual pieces from that design era are pulling down tremendous prices at auction, going for seventy-five thousand dollars or more, in some instances.  Auction houses are showing new interest in the well-kept items of three decades ago, as collectors and design experts seek them out.  It’s not just this country that has been feeling the impact of the past, either.  The Sydney Morning Herald in Australia recently published an article titled, “Retro Riches,” which made mention of this throwback to the designs of the 1980s.

Does that mean that you should run out and try emulating the striking shapes and primary color palettes of that era in your home?  Not necessarily.  However, this does give a person reason to consider the impact of past design in today’s remodels.  As for your home… rather than going all in and getting a look that pre-dates much of the working community today, you might be better to consider how unique lines and splashes of color could enhance a more modern look.  From bar stools to kids bedding, a mixture of the clean, crisp lines of recent times and the ‘80s-inspired bright hues can create beautiful, conversation-starting design.  Similarly, the ornate metal tables with glass tops, which were a huge hit in that decade, can also make a spectacular splash in a more classic setting.  So, while MSN might recommend that you de-‘80s your home, design industry leaders are suggesting that now might be the perfect time to embrace the remnants of the past.
